Four Landscaping Tips You Can Do On A Budget

The first piece of advice for anyone looking to landscaping their garden on the cheap is, have a plan. Think of a concept or envision what you want to do. Sketch it out on paper how it's going to look. Then, you can measure it or pace it out. This will give you some idea on the amount of materials that you are going to need. Also, avoid home garden centers like the plague!

Old Tires

One good material that can be used in landscaping is the faithful old car tire. Almost a natural resource, you can find them almost anywhere. They can be used in different ways. Put upright and half buried in the ground, they can be used as borders around flowerbeds or either side of a path. Filled with earth and stacked in a pattern, they are alternative rockeries or flower beds. It is easy to buy them cheaply or if you're in no hurry, collect them.

Building Waste

If you look around building sites, both large scale and smaller, you can find a variety of materials from prefab blocks to old bricks and stones. Become a scrounger, ask to take away stuff from skips and rubbish piles. With the scavenged bits and pieces you can build pathways, patios, retaining walls, borders and even garden furniture!

Recycling Bottles

Bottles can be used for different things. This is one resource that is very easy to gather. We all have empty bottles hanging around the house. Ask your family and friends to save them for you to and you'll soon have more than enough for your landscaping ideas. They can be embedded in walls or pathways. Coloured bottles can be hung from trees and frames as garden ornaments, positioned so the sun strikes them. They too can be used to mark out paths or surround flowerbeds.

Water Features

Think about having a water feature when casting about for ideas. This one may cost a bit of money, but just think about all that cash you saved using the tips above. It is lovely to have a bit of running water in your garden. The sound of trickling water always has a soothing effect on people. A little fountain won't cost much. Next time you're out scavenging, look out for old water tanks or baths. They can be used instead of buying or building your own pool. Basically all you need is some ornamental rocks and a small water pump, which won't cost the earth.
